Some jobs working in the Salesforce ecosystem allow you to work remotely. As and admin you work in an office full time or also work remotely on an occasion. As a full time consultant I work remotely but I also have worked in an office setting as a Salesforce admin. Below are some of my recommended tools and products to support your Salesforce career.
Working Remote
I will say working remote may not be everybody but for those looking to have more flexibly many Salesforce consulting jobs offer remote opportunities. Below are some considerations about working remotely.
Task management will be crucial to your success as a remote worker. There are many distractions when working remote and it will be important to make sure you keep a professional output and attentiveness. Being disciplined in your approach is key.
Work is always near. It can be difficult at times to close down shop and shut down work when working remote. Often times there is no commute home or time to decompress from the work day.
Going from work mode to home mode can be challenging. I recommend finding a way to take a walk or a complete a home chore to destress from work if needed.
Work life balance is very important in a world where we are constantly on the go. With working remote there is often opportunity to effectively plan your work time based on your own schedule.
If there is a time you need to adjust your schedule then I recommend doing so as long as you get the job done and the clients are happy all is good.
Set work limits. I implement a rule that I would avoid working weekends unless there was a go live or a deadline required. Set up working times on your calendar and try to keep those working hours as best you can.
Desk Setup
When it comes to working at home or in the office it is important to have proper equipment and desk to support the day to day tasks of a Salesforce consultant or admin. Below are some of my favorite components and items I use on a daily basis as a Salesforce consultant.
Dedicated desk. There are many items that can serves as a desk like a dining room table, a card table, and even a coffee table. There are times as a consultant or an admin that you be on several calls and having a dedicated space to retreat to prepare and be on camera for a zoom/virtual call will be warranted.
I currently have a dedicated desk that I am able to raise into a standing desk. Here are some examples of desks that work well if you are looking for ideas:
- ODK Computer Desk Large office
- ErGear Height Adjustable Electric Standing Desk
- FEZIBO Triple Motor 63″ L Shaped Desk
Supportive chair. Another important setup component is having a reliable and supportive chair. Proper lumbar support will go along way to keep your neck and back aligned. I have used a used steel series chair the last 7 years and it’s been wonderful! Here are some possible chair options to consider.
- Steelcase Leap V2 Office Chair
- GABRYLLY Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair
- Sweetcrispy Office Computer Desk Chair
Computer. The engine that makes remote work run outside of yourself is a cpu. There are so many options to choose from but I do recommend looking for a computer that would have enough processing power to operate many tabs, large excel sheets, virtual desktops, and be able to sustain the day to day use. I am currently using a laptop and I love the flexibility.
Webcam. In today’s work environment being on virtual meetings is very common and it is normal for a consultant to only communicate via zoom type meetings. You will want a webcam either built into you laptop or an external webcam.
External webcams are wonderful as they allow you to not have to rely on an open laptop and can be positioned in a key location more easily. Looking for a web cam here are 2 that currently utilize for work and streaming.
Mouse. I highly recommend looking at getting an ergonomic mouse. The ergonomic nature will help keep your wrists aligned and hopefully reduce strains on your hands. They may seem odd at first but you can get used to them quickly.
Headset. Like everything on this list there are so many different headsets out there and I do recommend maybe trying a couple of different ones out. I tried many over the years. If you use a Mac you may find Air Pods to work great or if your using a pc you may find that wired headphones work better than Bluetooth.
I have found that there are three factors to look for when trying headphones/headphones sets. Noise cancellation ability, microphone quality, and comfort. Here are some headphones I recommend checking out.
- Logitech G Pro X Wired Gaming Headset
- SteelSeries Artis 7P Wireless Gaming Headset
- ASTRO Gaming A40 TR Wired Headset
Monitor. Just like with the computer there are many options and configurations to choose from. You can work on a laptop screen, dual monitors and also ultrawide monitors. Even a combination of all 3. I recommend utilizing at least 2 monitors to allow for note taking/multiple tab ease of use.
I started out using dual 21” monitors and then moved to a 34” ultra wide monitor and I have loved it. Here are some recommendations.
Please let me know what works well for your remote work environment. Do you have a favorite setup or item you feel is a must have? Drop a comment or send me a message and we can expand this list together. Enjoy!
