Have you ever needed to figure out where all a Salesforce field is utilized? Are you looking to delete or hide a field and curious what will break if you do so? Salesforce has some great built in features to help an admin or consultant out. Check out these two awesome tips for analyzing fields and bonus tip – permissions.
Where is this field used?
Looking to check to see where a field is being used no longer requires 3rd party metadata tools. Simply navigate to the object and field in question and look for the button “Where is this field Used”. Once you select the button you will see all references of the field in the following metadata.
- Active validation rules
- Visualforce page
- Page layouts
- Apex
- Email templates
- Formula fields
- Flows etc.
- Many more options seen here
If integrations are in place I also recommend checking with your integration team and test removal of fields in a sandbox first.
Bonus: Permission Set Overview
Recently Salesforce is moving towards utilizing permission sets and permission set groups more so than the traditional profile. Permission sets allow additional permissions to be extended to users and can be grouped together within a permission set group.
Have you ever wondered what does a permission set actually grant to a user? In the past the description and title would maybe give you a clue but an admin would have to dig into the permission set and search for all the enabled permissions.

Thankfully a new feature on the permission set has emerged. Next time you are on a permission set navigate to the “Overview” button and select it to get a listing of enables permissions for the set. This list view will provide you a quick and accurate detection of what the permission set is granting. This is one of my favorite features!
